Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza, a prominent Mayan city in Mexico, flourished from the 5th to the 13th centuries CE and stands as one of the seven wonders of the world. The city, heavily influenced by the Toltecs, saw significant construction by the Itza Mayans, with notable monuments such as the iconic stepped pyramid known as El Castillo, towering 79 feet above the Main Plaza. The pyramid’s design, featuring 365 steps representing the solar year, reflects the Mayans’ advanced astronomical knowledge. During equinoxes, the setting sun casts shadows that mimic a serpent descending the north stairway, culminating at a stone snake head at its base.
