This is an international airport with a total area of over 225,000 square meters (largest airport in Kerala), located at Nedumbassery, about 25 km towards the northeast of the city Kochi, in Kerala, India. It is the first of its kind which is developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model in India. Among all Indian Airports, it is the eighth busiest airport in India (The busiest airport in Kerala) in terms of international traffic and also the eighth busiest overall. it operates three passenger terminals and one cargo terminal and in 2020 the airport was awarded The Best Airport in Asia-Pacific by Airports Council International.

In the year 1911, India’s first commercial civil aviation flight, which was carrying mail, took off across the Yamuna River from Allahabad to Naini. After the merging of the National Airports Authority and the International Airports Authority of India On 1st April 1995, the Indian parliament passed an act by which the Airports Authority of India (AAI) was created which is solely responsible for maintaining and managing the civil aviation infrastructure of India both on the ground and air space. Currently, AAI provides air navigation services and manages a total of 162 airports which include 34 International airports and 128 Domestic airports.
In 1991, during the de-regularised of the civil aviation sector of India, the first national-level private airline to operate in the country was East-West Airlines. According to the civil aviation data for 2020, the size of the aviation market in India is the third-largest. Some important carriers of India are IndiGo, Air India, Spicejet, Go First, Vistara, AirAsia, etc. Recent data reveal that the Mumbai–Delhi air corridor is ranked the world’s third-busiest route.
