Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is the maritime arm of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, responsible for the naval defense of Japan.
- The JMSDF’s backbone is the four “escort flotillas” of surface ships. Each flotilla consists of a large helicopter carrying a destroyer (DDH) and seven modern surface escorts/anti submarine ships
- It has an official strength of 50,000 personnel, but presently numbers around 50,800 active personnel, and is headquartered in Tokyo. The JMSDF is known in particular for its anti-submarine warfare and minesweeping capabilities.
- The JMSDF was established in 1954, shortly after the end of World War II. The new force was tasked with defending Japan’s maritime borders and protecting its shipping lanes. The JMSDF has played a significant role in Japan’s security ever since, and has been involved in a number of international peacekeeping and disaster relief operations.
- The JMSDF is a well-trained and technologically sophisticated maritime force. It operates a wide range of vessels, including destroyers, frigates, submarines, and patrol boats.
