He was the world number one for a total of 348 weeks, and the only player to rank first for more than a year without interruption. He won three Olympic silver medals, in 2008, 2012, and 2016, becoming the most successful Olympic badminton player without a gold medal. He also won four Commonwealth Games gold medals, and a record 46 Superseries titles. He was known for his speed and agility, as well as his rivalry with Lin Dan, which was considered one of the greatest in sports history. He retired in 2019, after battling cancer and injuries.
