1976 Tangshan Earthquake
The 1976 Tangshan earthquake occurred on July 28, 1976 and had a magnitude of 7.8. It had a focal depth of 15 kilometers and lasted for 23 seconds and leveled 90% of Tangshan’s buildings. The shaking was felt more than 680 miles (1,100 km) away in all directions.

The epicenter was located directly under the city of Tangshan, which is an industrial and coal mining center located 100 miles east of Beijing. The earthquake was made up of two main shocks and caused serious damage and loss of life in the densely populated industrial city. Medical facilities were largely destroyed and they also suffered wide damages in Tianjin. The 1976 Tangshan earthquake is considered the deadliest earthquake of the 20th century and one of the deadliest in recorded history. The earthquake caused extensive property damage and injured at least 700,000 people.
