About Pulse Production in India
India produces 27–28% of the world’s pulses, making it the leading producer in the world. Globally, 14% of pulses are imported by India. Also, 7–10% of India’s total foodgrain production is made up of pulses. Moreover, pulses are suitable for growth in both the Rabi and Kharif seasons. Rabi crops, which are harvested in April and June, are cultivated abundantly and contribute to 60% of the whole output.
Gram is the most important crop, comprising up to 40% of all pulses. However, 15-20% of the entire production is made up of toor or arhar daal. Moong daal and urad daal constitute 8–10% of the total production. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka are the top five states in India for producing pulses.

List of Top 10 Pulse-Producing States in India: Pulse-Producing states of India make a major contribution to the total output of the country. India produced 14.76 million tonnes of pulses in the FY 2020-21. With 4,821,840 tons produced annually, Rajasthan is India’s top producer of pulses. Madhya Pradesh is the second-largest producer of pulses in India, with an annual production of 4,364,740 tonnes. Maharashtra ranks third among the states that produce the most pulses in India, with a production of 4,224,870 tons in FY 2020–21.
India is the world’s biggest importer (14%), user (27% of global consumption), and producer (25% of global output) of pulses.
