Beyond the Four Varnas: Integration
In the diverse landscape of the subcontinent, there have always been communities whose social practices diverged from Brahmanical ideals. These groups, when mentioned in Sanskrit texts, were depicted as peculiar, uncivilized, or even animalistic. Among them were forest-dwellers, whose livelihoods relied on hunting and gathering, as exemplified by the nishadas, to whom Ekalavya is said to have belonged.
Nomadic pastoralists also faced suspicion due to their lifestyle, which didn’t neatly fit into settled agricultural frameworks. Those who spoke non-Sanskritic languages were labeled as mlechchhas and often looked down upon. Despite these divisions, there existed a shared exchange of ideas and beliefs among these diverse communities, as evidenced by stories found in the Mahabharata.
