Germany was split between the capitalist West and the communist USSR following World War II. The collapse of the Soviet Union was caused by a sequence of events that began with the fall of the Berlin Wall. The reasons behind the collapse of the Soviet Union or USSR were political rigidity, economic weakness, and the rise of nationalism.
