Controversies on Bharat Ratna Award

  • Suspensions: The award was suspended twice in history. First, in 1977 when Morarji Desai’s government withdrew all personal civil honors, and it was reinstated in 1980 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The second suspension occurred in 1992 due to legal challenges, but it was reintroduced by the Supreme Court in 1995 after litigation.
