Johnson officially started his wrestling career in 1996. He performed in several tryout matches fixed by the Veteran wrestler Pat Patterson with the World Wrestling Federation. The first match where he defeated The Brooklyn Brawler as an official wrestler was on March 10. But unfortunately, he lost matches with Chris Candido and Owen Hart. He performed different matches at the United States Wrestling Association he won the title of USW tag team championship twice with his partner Bart Sawyer. Later, he was signed to a WWF contract and adopted the name Rocky Maivia for his matches.
Dwayne debuted on November 4, 1996, as a member of Marc Mero’s entourage and performed his first match on November 17, 1996, in an eight-man elimination tag match. He won the Intercontinental Championship on February 13, 1997. He had his first WrestleMania match on March 23, 1997.
Then the champion entered into the “Deadly Game” tournament for the vacant WWF championship. On November 15, 1998, he defeated Vince McMahon in the finals and won the championship. But, on January 24, 1999, he regained the title in a match called “I Quit”. He won his third WWF championship on February 15, in the match Raw is War, but unfortunately then lost the championship on march 28, 1999 against Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania XV.
He was very popular at this point in time. Although he lost the championship his fans still cheered him up and encouraged him. This was the rising point of his life. Unfortunately, he again lost the title on April 25 1999 in the rematch against Stone Cold Steve Austin. On April 29, 1999, he won a match aired by WWF called SmackDown against Triple H. Then he performed a match for the title of WWF championship against Undertaker but he lost.
After the SummerSlam, the Rock and Mankind formed a team and won the title of WWF Tag Team Champions. He defeated Undertaker and Big Show for the first time in the Raw is War match on August 30, 1999. After a few matches of winning and losing he won his fourth WWF championship on April 30 at Backlash. Following night on Raw, he won a title in a Steel Cage match against Shane McMahon.
He then won his fifth WWF championship at the King of the Ring on June 25 against Shane McMahon and defended the championship against Christ Benoit. Again, Dwayne won the title against Kurt Angle and Triple H the next month. On September 24, he again won the title against Undertaker, Benoit, and Kane. He, unfortunately, lost the next WWF championship on October 22, 2000, against Kurt Angle. On December 18 With his partner Undertaker, he won the title of WWF Tag Team Championship.
He won the WWF championship for the sixth time on February 25, 2001, against Kurt Angle. He then lost the title at WrestleMania X-Seven against Stone Steve Austin. Then in 2001, he played to win the title of WCW won for the first time against Booker T at SummerSlam. He won his second WCW championship against Jericho.
