Electric Charge Formula

Since we define electric charge as a product of current flowing in a certain time.

Mathematically charge is represented as

Q = I.T

where,

  • Q represents the Electric Charge
  • I represents the Current Flowing
  • T represents the Time

Derivation of Dimensional Formula of Charge

We derive a dimensional formula of charge. Since we can say the charge collected in a conductor having current in time t is represented as

Charge(q) = Current× Time

Dimensional formula of q = dimensional formula of (Current × Time)…(1)

Now we calculate the dimensional formula of each quantity individually

Dimensional formula of I = [M0L0A1]

Dimensional formula of T = [M0L0T1]

Putting all the above three-dimensional formulas in Equation (1) we get

Dimensional Formula of Charge = [M0L0A1] × [M0L0T1]

Dimensional Formula of Charge = [M0L0A1T1]

Hence, the dimensional formula of Charge is [AT]
