Ellora Caves – Construction
Besides being a site of the trade route, Ellora caves serve as lodgings for the traveling Buddhist and Jain monks. The temples and monuments are carved from the local cliff rock in the 6th to 8th centuries. The archaeologist had claimed that it would have taken more than a hundred years to finish the temple construction but in reality, it took only 18 years to complete it. The caves are a series of 34 monasteries and temples. There are 35 caves and rock-cut temples mainly composed of volcanic Basalt rock. Ellora caves are privately known as ‘Verulleni’. The caves are always open for visiting except Tuesday.
