History of Iron and Steel Industry in Jamshedpur
The steel plant at Jamshedpur was the first in India and one of the largest in the world. It was set up by Jamsetji Tata in 1907. The plant initially had a capacity of 1 million tonnes of pig iron and steel. The company expanded rapidly, reaching a production capacity of 3 million tonnes by World War II.
During the war, the steel plant was used to produce military equipment for the British Raj. After India’s independence in 1947, the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) was established to take over the running of the plant. The company continued to expand, with new plants being built in Rourkela and Bhilai. By the early 21st century, SAIL had become one of the largest steel producers in the world.
The iron and steel industry has played a pivotal role in the development of Jamshedpur. The city is home to some of the largest steel plants in India, which have helped to spur economic growth and create jobs.
