IAS Officer Allowances
Along with a handsome in-hand package, the IAS officers get a variety of allowances as a major part of their salary. The list of allowances includes the House Rent Allowance (HRA), Travel Allowance (TA), Dearness Allowance (DA), etc. The allowances offered to the officers have discussed in detail below.
Gross monthly salary of an IAS officer = Basic monthly pay + Allowances.
1. Housing Rent Allowance (HRA)
An IAS officer receives an HRA in case he needs to live in a rented accommodation at the place of his posting. If the officer is residing at an official accommodation then they are not eligible for the HRA. The HRA depends on the city of posting which is further described:
- The HRA of an IAS officer is 24% of the Basic Salary if he is posted in any of the 8 metro cities in India.
- If the officer gets posted into smaller cities which have a population of above 5 lakhs, then they get an HRA of 16%.
- The HRA for the rural areas is 8%.
2. Dearness Allowances (DA)
An IAS officer is paid the DA from the government to offset the effects of inflation and help the officers cope with the rising prices. The DA started from 0% after the 7th Pay commission and goes upto 31% which depends majorly on the inflation.
The Dearness Allowance is revised twice every year which is on the basis of the Cabinet Committee which is chaired by the Prime Minister.
3. Travel Allowances (TA)
The IAS officers get travel allowances by the government to help them meet their travel expenses. But if the officer is given a government vehicle then they won’t be eligible for TA.
Just like the DA, the TA is also variable. It keeps on changing from time to time, depending on the change in the price of fuel.
