International Tiger Day 2024: History
International Tiger Day started in 2010 when people discovered that almost 97% of wild tigers disappeared in the last 100 years. Now, only around 3,000 are left. Tigers are in danger of extinction, and this day wants to stop that. Losing their homes, climate change, hunting, and poaching are some reasons why their numbers are going down.
Not just saving tigers, but this day also wants to protect and make more space for them to live. Big organizations like WWF, IFAW, and the Smithsonian Institute also celebrate International Tiger Day.
Tigers are clashing with people more because they are losing their homes and climate is changing. Poaching, where people illegally hunt them and trade their body parts, is a big problem. People want tiger bones, skin, and other parts, and that’s making more tigers get killed.
Because of this, tigers are disappearing from some places, and it’s hard to bring them back. Losing their homes is a big issue too. Roads, houses, cutting trees, farming—all of this is taking away where tigers live. Only 7% of the places tigers used to live are left.
Experts are worried that because there aren’t many different tigers, they might start being too close in their families. Losing homes means tigers and people are meeting more, and that can be scary for both. We need to make sure tigers have safe places to live, or we might lose them forever.
