Key points on Haploid and Diploid
Some important key points of Haploid and Diploid cells are :
- Haploid cells contain only half of the genetic information of somatic cells.
- Diploid cells have same amount of genetic information as somatic cells.
- Haploid cells are essential in reproduction forming gametes and spores.
- Haploid cells form multicellular structures like gametophytes in ferns and hyphae in fungi.
- Haploid cells are generated by meiosis.
- Diploid cells produced by the process of mitosis.
Difference Between Haploid And Diploid
Haploid and Diploid are two terms that represent the number of ‘”set of chromosomes” in a cell. Haploid refers to the presence of a single set of chromosomes in an organism’s cells while Diploid refers to the presence of two sets of chromosomes in a cell. The term “PLOIDY” refers to the number of sets of chromosomes in a cell, hence the single set of chromosomes called Haploid and the double set of chromosomes called Diploid.
