Except can be used as a preposition or as a conjunction in a sentence. When used as a preposition, except means but or in simple language we can say, “not including” and when used as a conjunction, it is further followed by that.
- Except used as a preposition (followed by a noun): We have not told anyone except Kavya’s mother.
- Except when used as a conjunction (Followed by adverbial phase or by a clause): She knows nothing about him except that he is handsome.
