Need for Sustainable Agriculture
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Family Welfare, 69 million hectares of crop area were lost from FY 2015-16 to FY 2021-22. This loss could be attributed to various factors such as land degradation, climate change, and unsustainable farming practices. Embracing sustainable agriculture becomes crucial in such a challenging period as it can help improve farm incomes and nutrition security for the present and future generations.
Sustainable farming is an economically viable, socially supportive, and ecologically sound crop-growing method. The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) has identified 16 sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs), including organic farming, natural farming, integrated farming systems, agro-forestry, etc. Sustainable agricultural practices have been adopted by more than 4% of the farmers in India. There is a noticeable nationwide transition towards sustainable farming practices. Sikkim has already become 100% organic by adopting organic farming, while Andhra Pradesh aims to move towards 100% zero-budget natural farming by 2027.
Impact of Sustainable Agriculture and Farming Practices
Impact of Sustainable Agriculture and Farming Practices: Sustainable agriculture and farming practices have a profound impact on both the environment and food production. By promoting eco-friendly techniques such as organic farming, crop rotation, and integrated pest management, these practices enhance soil health, reduce water usage, and mitigate the reliance on synthetic inputs.
Sustainable agriculture contributes to healthier ecosystems, ensures food security, and addresses the challenges posed by climate change. It creates a more sustainable and resilient future for agriculture. The adoption of sustainable approaches fosters biodiversity, preserves ecosystems, and supports long-term agricultural resilience.
