The two countries are members of the Commonwealth of Nations and ASEAN, and share a number of historical and cultural affinities.Both countries are formally allied through the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), which also includes Australia, Britain, and New Zealand. Through the FPDA, Malaysia and Singapore have the only regular and substantial military-to-military links within Southeast Asia.The two countries also have strong bilateral trade, investment, and tourism ties. In 2022, Singapore and Malaysia were each other’s second-largest trade partners, with bilateral flows reaching $83.53 billion. Singapore was also one of Malaysia’s top sources of foreign direct investment in 2022.
