IIT JAM Mathematics Exam Experience

In my second year of BSc Mathematics, I came to know about the IIT JAM exam, the Joint Admission test for Masters. It is conducted every year in february by some IIT for admission into the Master of Science and other post graduate programs in IITs, NITs, IISERs, IISc and some other institutes in India. I was a bit unsure about my future plans at that time and hence, didn’t start my preparation until third year.

Syllabus and Study Materials:

In July 2022, I started my preparation for the JAM Mathematics. I first went through the syllabus of the test in detail. It includes topics from Real Analysis, Linear Algebra, Group Theory, Ordinary Differential Equations and Integral Calculus. Since, I had already done courses in Group Theory and ODE in my second year of BSc, I started my prep with these topics and then moved to Real Analysis, Integral Calculus and at last Linear Algebra....

Problem Practice:

I used to do the solved exercises and a few unsolved exercises from these books at first. But the JAM is an objective type exam consisting of MCQs, MSQs, and NATs. Hence, it is important to solve a lot of problems of these types. One can easily find the Past Year Questions (PYQs) of JAM on the internet. Solving them gives you an idea of the difficulty level of the exam and the high-weightage topics of the syllabus. Apart from the PYQs, I practiced problems from the study materials of some coaching institutes....

Role of Coaching:

I didn’t take any coaching for my prep because I already attended most of the lectures in my college and hence, had a clear understading of the basics. But if you are from a college where lectures are not held regularly, you might choose to take the subsciption of some online course of any coaching. There also a lot of teachers teaching and guiding the students on YouTube, you can also follow them and then the books. To practise problems, you can get the study materials of these counderstandingchings....

Mock Tests:

This is the most important part of the preparation. You should give as many mocks as possible. I bought the test series of Career Endeavour for my prep, which included unitwise and full mocks. It had some wrong answer keys but overall, the mocks were good. The problems were a bit easier than what is generally asked in the JAM exam....

Exam Day:

The last week before the exam, I spent less time in studies and more in trying to make myself calm and motivated. Watched a movie or two and slept for more than 8 hours a day. I just revised my notes a bit and didn’t practise many problems....
