Significance of Raksha Bandhan

The term ‘Raksha Bandhan’ means ‘protection’ in Sanskrit. Although the festival is associated with many rituals in different regions of India, all of them involve tying of a thread. Sisters tie a thread on her brother’s wrist, praying for their good health and prosperous life in return of which the brother promises to protect her. The brother gifts the sister once the Rakhi is tied.

The festival of Raksha Bandhan has been celebrated since ancient times. Earliest reference to Rakhi can be found in stories related to Alexander the Great and in many Hindu scriptures which highlight the rich cultural significance.

When it comes to Indian mythology, we see how in Mahabharat, Krishna and Draupadi, were very good friends. It is said that, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to bandage Krishna’s wound when he injured his finger in the battle. Krishna promises to repay her kindness which came in when he provided her with cloth & protected her while she was being disrobed by the Kauravas.

It is also said that she tied a Rakhi to Krishna before he left for the great war. Also Kunti, the mother of the Pandavas, is said to have tied a Rakhi to her grandson Abhimanyu before he went for the battle, as a sign of blessing & protection.
