Surge Test or Impulse Test
In high voltage testing of electrical equipment, there is an electrical test called surge test or impulse test which is used to determine the insulation strength and capability to handle transient voltage (also called surges).
This test is mainly performed on those electrical equipment which are supposed to be subjected to switching or lightning surges. This test gives a measure of reliability of electrical equipment under transient or unstable operating condition.
Therefore, the purposes of the surge test or impulse test are:
- To determine the capability of electrical equipment under transient conditions.
- To evaluate the performance and reliability of insulation under short-duration high voltage spikes.
- To determine the probability of insulation failure due to transients.
