The word temperate means not too cold or too hot. This zone is characterised as being warm in the summer, cold in the winter, and moderate in the spring and fall. The rays of the sun do not shine directly overhead at any latitude beyond the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The angle of falling sun rays keeps decreasing towards the poles on both hemispheres. The sun peaks highest at 73° to 0°. Therefore, the temperature in these areas is moderate and tolerable, ranging from 0°C to 20°C on average.
