The History and Growth of Google
Two students named Larry Page and Sergey Brin made Google while studying for their doctorate degrees at Stanford University. Their search tool was different because it looked at what was on web pages and how many other pages linked to them.
They thought it must be important if many pages are linked to a page. This idea helped make Google the most popular way to search for things.
Larry and Sergey got their first big money in 1998 and set up an office in California. They picked the name Google because it sounded like “googol,” a huge number (a 1 with 100 zeros). By 1999, lots of people were using Google to search every day.
The company grew even bigger in 2000 when it worked with Yahoo!, a popular website back then. In 2004, Google had an IPO, which is when a company sells shares to the public to get more money. This made the company even bigger and made Larry and Sergey very rich.
What is Google?
Google is an internet search engine that utilizes a proprietary algorithm designed to fetch and prioritize search results to deliver the most relevant and reliable information.
Google’s stated mission is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” It holds the position as the top search engine globally, a status that has brought both criticism and concern regarding its influence over the flow of online information.
Due to its dominance, the term “Google” has also become a verb. When someone searches for information using Google, they often say they “Googled” it.
