Practising listening exercises, listening to everyday things like radio shows and TV programs, and focusing on learning words about topics you’ll hear helps you understand better and improves your scores.

Here are simple and quick tips to enhance your scores for the IELTS listening test:

Try to learn new words

In Section 3, you often hear education-related discussions, like students chatting with a teacher about a school project. Knowing many words about university studies helps you to do well. This lets you grasp what’s being discussed in this part of the test. Try learning as many words as possible about going to college. This way, you’ll find Section 3 more straightforward to understand.

Recognizing type of words

Before listening, determine what kind of word goes in each blank. Is it a naming word (noun), a doing word (verb), a word describing an action (adverb), or a describing word (adjective)? Mark ‘N’ for noun, ‘V’ for verb, and so on.

This helps you pay attention to the suitable types of words while you listen.

Stay focussed

Candidates will hear the audio just once. If they miss some words or skip questions, don’t stress! Leave those blanks empty and concentrate on what’s being said. They can go back to those questions later after the section. If they try to complete everything simultaneously, they might miss even more and get confused by the recording. They must read, write, and listen simultaneously, so stay focused.

Pay attention to word indicators

Listen carefully for words like “however,” “but,” “then,” and “finally” while you listen. These words help you know what’s coming next. For example, “but” means something new is coming, “then” means it’s in order, and “finally” means it’s the last thing. Paying attention to these words helps you understand what the speaker is saying.

Check answers carefully

After attempting each part, you have 30 seconds to look at your answers. Check if you spelt words right, made plurals correctly, and used the proper forms of words. Only the correct answers will get points.

Understand the situation

Before doing each part, they tell you what’s coming up, like ‘Now, you’ll hear people talking about…’ or ‘you’ll hear someone talking about…’. This isn’t written on your question paper, so listen carefully. Pay attention to who’s talking, why, and where they are. It helps you understand the rest of what you hear better. So, understand the situation clearly and what is going b to be next.

Attempt all Questions

Even if you need more time, it’s okay to guess. Your points won’t get deducted for wrong answers. So, write something in the answer box. Give it your best!
