What are Algebraic Expressions

Algebraic expressions are the way through which we can express numbers with the usage of letters or alphabets without specifying their actual values. These expressions are used to represent quantities or the relationship between the quantities with the means of variables and constants.

Letters which are used in the algebraic expressions are known as variables. The numbers which we use in the algebraic expressions are known as constants. In algebraic expressions, the coefficient of a variable is defined as the value which is present before the variable or multiplied with the variable. For example:- 3x + 2y – 5, x – 20, etc.

Types of Algebraic Expressions

There are various types of Algebraic expressions and a few of them are:

  • Monomial: Monomials are algebraic expressions which consist of only one term. For example: 4x, 5y.
  • Binomial: Binomial are algebraic expressions which consist of two terms which are either separated by addition or subtraction. For example: 4x + 5, 5y – 2.
  • Trinomial: Trinomial are algebraic expressions which consist of three terms which are either separated by addition or subtraction. For example: x2 + 4x + 5, 5y2 + 6y – 2.
  • Polynomial: Polynomials are algebraic expressions which consist of one or more terms which are either separated by addition or subtraction. It can contain any number of terms. For example: x3 – x2 + 4x + 5, 5y3 + 2y2 + 6y – 2.
