What are the Lungs?
The lungs play a vital role in the respiratory system. The human chest cavity holds two lungs. They have a network of bronchioles that carry air to the lungs. It also has balloon-like structures called alveoli and a network of blood capillaries that expand the lungs’ surface area for gas exchange. The bronchioles fill the alveoli with air, and oxygen diffuses into the blood capillaries, while carbon dioxide diffuses from the capillaries into the alveoli.
