What is Chemoheterotrophs?

Chemoheterotrophs or chemotrophic heterotrophs are those organisms that use organic chemical compounds as their energy sources during chemosynthesis. These organic chemical sources mostly consist of carbon. Here are some major characteristics of the Chemoheterotrophs as mentioned below. 

  • Chemoheterotrophs are not able to synthesize their food. 
  • They depend on the chemoautotrophs and ingest preformed carbon molecules including charbohydrates or lipids. 
  • Chemoheterotrophs are an abundant type of chemotropic organism that uses inorganic electron sources.
  • All humans are chemoheterotrophs as they gain energy by consuming different organic compounds like plants and animals.

Chemotrophs word came from two Greek words, chemo (meaning chemical) and trophy (nourishment). In our environment, energy transfer is a common phenomenon. In this, one gains energy whereas the other one loses. The energy can be converted from one state to another.
