What is Microbiology?

Microbiology is the branch of Biology that has the study of microorganisms in detail. Microorganisms like viruses, fungi, algae, and protozoa are been studied in detail in the field of Microbiology. This also involved the deep study of their structure, function, ecology, and genetics. The interaction of these microorganisms with the environment, other living things, and non-living things are been studied. Along with this, Microbiology includes the knowledge of diseases that are being caused due to microorganisms and also the prevention of living to treat them. There are many sub-branches of Microbiology such as medical microbiology, environmental microbiology, industrial biology, and astrobiology. There are many applications of Microbiology such as antibiotics, vaccines, and improving food safety and quality.

Branches of Microbiology:

  1. Medical Microbiology: This branch studies diseases that are caused by microorganisms. Microbiologists work to identify, diagnose and treat diseases that are caused by various microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
  2. Immunology: As the same suggests, this branch deals with the immune system of microorganisms. The concern of study in this branch is how the immune system identifies and fights infections and diseases.
  3. Environmental Microbiology: In this branch, there is the study of the interaction of microorganisms with the environment including water, soil, air, and other living organisms.
  4. Food Microbiology: Food Microbiology is the study of microorganisms in food, including their survival, growth, and interaction with food products.
  5. Industrial Microbiology: In the Industrial Processes, microorganisms are used for the production of enzymes antibiotics, and other biotech products. So Industrial Microbiology is the study of all these industrial processes.

Difference Between Biology and Microbiology

Whether Biology and Microbiology the same?” the answer is No, these two terms are not entirely different, but in some, parameters they differ from each other. Microbiology is a child part of Biology which consist of the intensive and deep study of microorganisms, their living mechanisms, and their structure. In this article, we will understand the Biology and Microbiology term in detail. Later, we will explore the difference between these two scientific terms and lastly go through FAQs which will help to clear the concept in more detail.
