World press Freedom index is released on World Press Freedom day. It was first celebrated in 1993, following the recommendation of the General Conference of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The date May 3 was chosen to commemorate the Windhoek Declaration.

The index provides an overview of the state of press freedom globally and highlights trends and issues affecting journalists in different regions.
